Why Is Alteration So Important?

  1. Perfect Fit: Off-the-rack clothing may not always fit everyone's unique body shape and size. Alteration services ensure that garments are tailored to fit your body perfectly, enhancing your overall appearance and boosting your confidence.
  2. Clothing Preservation: Well-made and beloved garments can last for years with proper alterations. Instead of discarding items that may not fit perfectly anymore, alterations can extend the lifespan of clothing, reducing waste and promoting sustainability.
  3. Tailored Professionalism: In professional settings, well-fitted clothing projects a polished and competent image. Alterations ensure that workwear and business attire fit impeccably, leaving a positive and lasting impression.
  4. Special Occasion Attire: For weddings, formal events, or milestone celebrations, alterations are essential to achieving a flawless and elegant look. Tailoring formal wear ensures that you feel and look your best on these special occasions.
  5. Body Changes: Throughout life, our bodies undergo changes, such as weight fluctuations or pregnancy. Alterations offer a cost-effective solution to adapt clothing to these changes, allowing you to maintain a well-fitting wardrobe.
  6. Confidence Boost: Wearing clothes that fit well and flatter your body can significantly boost your self-esteem. Alterations help you feel more comfortable and confident in your appearance, positively impacting various aspects of your life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

We recommend booking a fitting so a specialist can give your garment proper attention and discuss the result you have in mind. Drop-offs and quick assessments are welcome without an appointment, though booking ahead means you're seen without waiting.

Bring the garment clean, and — where it matters — the shoes and undergarments you intend to wear with it. For hemming, eveningwear, and tailoring, a few centimetres change the entire line, so this makes a real difference. For a restyle, any reference image of the look you're after helps us interpret it precisely.

We don't quote or commit to work from a photo. Fabric behaviour, construction, and how a piece actually sits on you can only be judged in person, and an honest assessment protects both your garment and the result. All work begins once the garment is with us in the studio.

Pricing & Payment

Pricing is set per garment once we've seen it, because cost depends on the fabric, the construction, and the precise work involved — not a fixed menu. After your fitting you'll have a clear price before any work begins. No surprises.

Two hems that look identical can require very different work depending on lining, fabric, and finish. A flat list would either overcharge simple pieces or undervalue the craftsmanship complex ones deserve. We'd rather assess each garment individually and quote you directly.

For restyling, bridal, embroidery, and larger made-to-order projects, a deposit confirms your booking and reserves studio time, with the balance settled on collection. Straightforward alterations are usually settled in advance at the point of drop off.

Turnaround

Most standard alterations are ready within 2 to 3 days depending on our current works. Detailed work — restyling, beadwork, bridal, or several garments at once — takes longer and is scheduled around the care it needs. You'll have a collection date at your fitting. We do provide express services subject to additonal charge.

When the studio's schedule allows, we can prioritise urgent work for an expedited fee. Tell us your deadline at the fitting and we'll be honest about what's achievable without compromising the finish.

What We Alter

A few of the most requested: hemming and shortening, taking garments in or letting them out, sleeve and strap adjustments, waist and seat adjustments, zip and lining replacement, resizing, and full restyling. This is only part of what we do, call us now for the full range.

Yes, within the seam allowance the garment was built with. At your fitting we'll tell you exactly how much room there is to work with and what's realistically achievable while keeping the garment's proportions correct.

Often, yes — though substantial resizing is closer to reconstruction than a simple adjustment, and some designs have far more give than others. We'll assess the construction and advise honestly on what will look right versus what will look altered.

Yes. Tailored pieces are among the most rewarding to get right, and small adjustments to the jacket, trouser, or waist often transform how a suit reads. These typically involve more than one fitting.

We do, including beaded, embellished, and structured pieces. These require particular techniques and time, which we'll talk through at your fitting. Some of this work is by assessment only — bring the piece in so we can advise.

Yes. We regularly handle abayas, kaftans, and traditional and occasion garments — length, fit, and detailing alike — with the finish each piece deserves.

Of course. Most of what we alter are pieces our clients already own and love — that's the heart of the work.

Fittings & Results

Simple alterations often need just one. Tailored, structured, or bridal pieces may take two or three, because precision is built up in stages — each fitting brings the garment closer to sitting exactly as it should.

If an adjustment we agreed on hasn't come out as it should, bring the garment back and we'll put it right — we stand behind our work. New requests or a change of mind are treated as fresh work, which we'll happily assess.

In many cases, yes — recreating a well-loved piece in fresh fabric is part of our new-stitching service. Bring the original in and we'll talk through what's possible.

Bridal & Eveningwear

Yes — these are among our most carefully handled pieces, often needing several fittings as the date approaches. Bring your gown in well ahead of time and wear your chosen shoes to every fitting so the length and line are exact.

Yes. Fine and high-value garments are exactly the work we're built for, handled by specialists who understand how each fabric and construction should be treated. We'll always advise before we proceed, never after.

In many cases, yes — recreating a well-loved piece in fresh fabric is part of our new-stitching service. Bring the original in and we'll talk through what's possible.

A Note on Altering vs. Replacing

We think so. The most sustainable garment is almost always the one you already own, refitted to suit you now. Restyling and resizing extend the life of the pieces you love — and the investment you've already made in them.
